What inspires you when you make your 3D fiber paintings?
Nature. How nature is affected by light and the seasons seasons. I am also drawn to the color theory of the impressionists. They were very interested in how light affects color and ow one colors positioning next to another effected a color. Yes, my “point” is not fluid in the traditional way of thinking. So it’s not as pliable, however the science behind the above color theory still applies when I choose my pigments (fibers). The process is much the same as if I were using tubes of liquid paint.
I am also inspired by the rawness of emotion. Unfiltered, I want to give the viewer a chance to visit some recess of his/her life. Evoking an actual memory or creating fantasy.
What inspires my drawings and collages?
I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil; this is how I center myself. My love of pen and ink was a natural outgrowth of my need to highlight the simplicity of line, shape and what one can do with just the use of contrast.
My drawings, like my paintings are sculptural in way. Over the years, I have chipped away at any unnecessary elements. Meaning, that these contemporary drawings only have what is ESSENTIAL in the way of lines and shapes to convey the message. I have been most recently influenced by the drawing of Picasso and Matisse.
My collages help me to express my need to speak to the concept of the Jungian collective… we are all connected. There are truly no new concepts, only new connections pieced together.
Collage is also a great way to bridge my other loves as all are present.
Do you prefer commissions or making a piece that you come up with on your own?
I love working with people from all over the world; getting to know them. Hearing about it then using that for their pieces. Of it’s a corporate art piece, a piece of art for their home, or a piece of art for their small business; I love to see the moment when a client's eyes light up when our collaboration has been a success! Perfect!
Just as gratifying in a completely different way is that moment when I have a tangible product in front of me of a piece that I’ve dreamt to complete.
Some pieces live with me for years before they are born.
Why do you call your 3D fiber art a painting if in fact the pigment is not wet? or the paint does not come out of a tube?
Simple. When I am creating with the fibers, I have a pallet full of pigment. I am carefully picking and choosing which colors and how much will get used. It’s a very exciting process.
As if I were using liquid paint in tubes. I wrap and re-wrap in just the right proportions. I blur when I need to blur.
I make the pigment more intense when necessary.
To watch the process is to see any fine artist paint at work. I have just extrapolated the painting process to another level.
People have been painting with pastels for years, and they’re not a liquid.
